An LG spokesperson has revealed to CNet that LG is taking a break from Google’s Nexus program this time around, which means that the Korean company will not be working with Google on a new Nexus handset this year.
The spokesperson revealed that LG is taking this break to focus on its brand. Instead, the company will be dedicating its resources behind the G5, which it launched earlier this week at MWC. The spokesperson, however, clarified that the relationship between LG and Google has not turned sour due to former’s decision to not work on a Nexus phone this year. He also said that LG is “totally happy” with its relationship and its work on the Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X. The LG-made Nexus 5 — launched in 2013 — was the most popular Nexus phone ever made by Google, and due to heavy demand, the company teamed up with Google again last year to release the Nexus 5X, the successor to the original Nexus 5. In addition, the spokesperson also revealed that it will be re-releasing the LG Watch Urbane LTE 2nd edition later this year. The company had launched the smartwatch last year, but pulled it within a week of going on sale due to some issues with display. The company will also release another completely new smartwatch in the second half this year. LG’s reason definitely makes sense: while working with Google on a Nexus handset does provide an OEM with a lot of exposure and experience, it does not help in building its brand in anyway.
