Right now, the general public is enjoying both the golden age of television and comic book adaptations, so it only makes sense that the two would cross over eventually. Unsurprisingly too, television is becoming an increasingly more opportune medium for artists, creators, and studios to be able to tell and adapt superhero or comic book stories in interesting, long-form ways that wouldn’t work on the silver screen. There’s no need to look much further than what Marvel and Netflix have done together with their Defenders series for that, or even the depths to which The CW’s Arrowverse has been able to explore the DC Comics universe.
In just a few short weeks as well, comic book fans are going to be getting one of the weirdest and most ambitious comic book adaptations to come along in quite some time with FX’s Legion. Created by Fargo showrunner, Noah Hawley, and starring Dan Stevens, it looks just like the kind of mind-bending, artistic trip that fans familiar with the character were likely hoping for.
In continuation of the network’s steady stream of promos and marketing for the series, yet another new promo for Legion has now arrived. Set to “Never My Love,” the short TV spot features David Haller (Stevens) and the mysterious Syd (Rachel Keller) enjoying a brief moment of romantic connection with each other, before their love eventually brings about the end of the world. Or at least some kind of nuclear explosion. Or at least, that what it looks like. With David Haller, most times things aren’t actually what they seem to be.
It’s difficult to think of a writer or creator working today who’s more fitting of doing a Legion TV series than Hawley, and so far, the Legion promos have only continued to be proof of that it seems. Considering how much magical realism and weird, trippy moments that Hawley was able to fit in the first two seasons of Fargo alone (a “true crime” series that somehow managed to make a random storyline about UFOs work in its second season), the possibilities of what he’ll be able to write and create, visually alone, with David Haller’s powers is staggering to even contemplate.
Not much is truly known about Legion, other than that it follows David Haller, a diagnosed schizophrenic who is actually of the most powerful mutants in the world, as he tries to understand his powers and separate the things he sees and the voices he hears in his head from what’s actually real, and what’s not. Most of the show’s marketing has been focused on its tripper aspects as well, though it’s nice to see more of David and Syd’s supposed connection on display in this new promo, especially since not all that much has been revealed about her character yet.
Hawley probably has a very specific plan for how he’s going to reveal more about these Legion characters and David Haller’s world throughout the series’ episodes - and in a show this mysterious and vague, if only one thing’s for sure, it’s that it should be unlike anything the comic book TV show genre has seen before.
