Valve has denied development of Left 4 Dead 3 or any other new game in the franchise. There have been rumors suggesting the company has been working on a new sequel for years now. In 2012, the lead writer of the series mentioned they were considering the possibility, but no official announcement came from that. Over the years, there have been several leaks and trailers that have turned out to be very official looking fakes. Fans have been willing to latch onto anything even tangentially related to the Left 4 Dead franchise, as many crave a new installment.
Left 4 Dead is a cooperative zombie shooter game that first released in 2008. The series’ main focus was built around four players working together to survive each level. Players can use firearms, melee weapons, and throwable weapons in order to carve through huge swathes of zombies. Left 4 Dead was extremely innovative for its time because each game was overseen by an AI that controlled all of the zombies. This AI punishes players who strayed away from the group or gave better weapons to those that performed well. This ensured that no two playthroughs were ever the same. Both titles in the franchise have been considered some of the best horror games of all time.
Today, IGN reports that Valve is not currently working on Left 4 Dead 3, and there are no plans to do so anytime soon. Valve has referred to all of the rumors surrounding the game to be misinformation and speculation on the part of fans. At one point in time the company entered talks to develop a sequel to the series on next-gen consoles, but those ideas never entered development. Valve went on to reiterate that it has not worked on anything related to the series in years. Read Valve’s statment below:
This response from Valve comes from the recent explosion of rumors surrounding the series. Some of those rumors came from claims that Left 4 Dead 3 would be in VR like recent Valve title Half Life: Alyx. Whereas other claims have centered around having leaked Left 4 Dead game screenshots or concept art hidden away somewhere, none of the rumors came with any kind of official source or through legitimate channels.
We’ve seen rumors to this effect for the last couple of months. We did briefly explore some Left 4 Dead next gen opportunities a few years ago. But we are absolutely not working on anything L4D related now, and haven’t for years. It’s clear some people are having fun creating misinformation to spin up the community and other outlets. Unfortunately, for now a new L4D game is not something we’re working on.
The Left 4 Dead games were absolutely revolutionary during the time they were released. With the amount of enjoyment fans got out of the games, it is no wonder they manage to latch on to any news that looks semi-legitimate. Even then, some fans believe that by continuing to ask for Left 4 Dead 3, the game will be made. Once again though, the company involved is Valve. Valve has an entire back catalog of games like Portal and Half-Life that fans have demanded sequels for to no avail. Maybe one day in the future players will get to revisit Left 4 Dead.
